VSEBINA Ernesto je uspešen slikar in ilustrator, predan oče in – ateist. Nekega popoldneva pride v njegov studio sel iz Vatikana in ga osupne z novico, da bo njegova pokojna mama morda razglašena za svetnico. Dejstvo, da Ernesto svoje mame nikoli ni maral in ima o njej povedati veliko slabega, ga zbliža z njegovim norim blasfemičnim bratom, ki je mamo ubil, medtem ko so preostali družinski člani naklonjeni mamini beatifikaciji. One afternoon a messenger from Vatican brings him the news about the possible canonization of his late mother. His extreme dislike for her brings about a greater connection with his insane brother who killed her, while his other brothers favour her beatification. Ernesto\'s atheistic cynicism collides with his family\'s opportunism.
“A journalist asked me to react on the catholic organizations\' attack on the film. I was accused of having something against the family, against the church (already since my film »I pugni in tasca«). But that is not the fact. Undoubtedly, there is a laic standpoint implicated in the film, but my intention was to capture protagonist\'s passion, his ability to fall in love again, and to perceive, contrary to his brothers, the image of his mother being somewhat mysterious and yet a common woman. He certifies his atheism by falling in love with a woman.” (Marco Bellocchio)
